Stakeholders Welcome New Saskatchewan Immigration Services Act

The Immigration Services Act, which was introduced in Saskatchewan as a reform to the way it handles and protects its immigration work force, is being met with positive feedback.

“The Regina Open Door Society is encouraged by the introduction of the new Immigration Services Act, which strengthens the framework of support for newcomers in Saskatchewan,” Regina Open Door Society Communications Manager Victoria Flores said.

“By enhancing regulatory oversight and legal protections, this act helps us better serve and safeguard the interests of those arriving in our province.”

The Act came into force on July 1, aimed at bolstering the province’s ability to manage and monitor the immigration system and protect foreign workers from exploitation, the Saskatchewan government website posted.

It was introduced as a replacement to the Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act (FWRISA) in April, which brings all immigration authorities in Saskatchewan under a single legislative body.

The province said that the new policy will enable it to respond to the immigration system’s dynamic and changing needs and streamline the process for employers recruiting from outside Canada to address their workforce needs.

“Saskatchewan continues to attract newcomers from all over the world, who are essential to growing the economy and filling our province’s labour market needs,” said Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison.

“This strengthened legislation will enhance Saskatchewan’s ability to protect foreign workers as they arrive in the province, streamline processing for employers, and will set a new standard for program integrity in Canada.”

According to Anne McRorie, Immigration and career training policy executive director, “(The act includes) increasing the maximum fine amounts for offenses or violations under the act and also implement new administrative penalties.”

“In addition, it further protects foreign workers by increasing the oversight of immigration recruiters, consultants and employers who are recruiting internationally.”

As per Global News, the fines would be the highest in the country.

The new legislation, according to the province, will help it reach its goal of 1.4 million people by 2030.
