If you are an Australian citizen, you can apply to renounce your citizenship if you already have another country’s citizenship, or you will have immediately after your application to renounce Australian citizenship is approved.
After you give up Australian citizenship, you cannot
- apply for or renew an Australian passport
- return to Australia without a visa
- register children born overseas as Australian citizens by descent
- ask for consular assistance from an Australian official while overseas
- join the Australian Defence Force
-
You may be eligible to apply if you
- are already the citizen of another country or will acquire citizenship of another country as soon as your application to renounce Australian citizenship is approved
- cannot become a citizen of the country where you were born or are ordinarily resident in while you are an Australian citizen
We will not approve your application to renounce your citizenship if you do not have another foreign citizenship or it is not in Australia’s interests.
